Anxiety While Driving

Suffering from anxiety while driving can be dangerous, but there is good news because there are lots of new ways to treat such conditions and conquer your fear of driving.

Safety First

 The Driving Fear Program

Before we get into talking about treatments for people who have a fear of driving, remember to put your safety and the safety of others first.  I know you may have important places to go and things you want to see, but if you are suffering from an anxiety attack its best to pull your car over and stop immediately.

If you are on the freeway you could take the next exit ramp, or if you can't wait that long to slow down, then park on the shoulder of the road. Then just try and close your eyes and relax and do some relaxation techniques until you feel that you are under control again before drive. If you don't feel you're able to it is always best to call someone to come and pick you up.

Multiple Treatment Options

There are many different approaches when you want to treat anxiety while driving. Not all of these approaches will work for all people, but the good news is you only have to find one approach that will work for you consistently whenever you apply it to conquer your fear of driving.

This could be meditation, breathing techniques, relaxation techniques, etc.  Your goal right now should be to try and experiment with as many different treatment options as possible.

Anyone who suffers from anxiety attacks or even panic attacks knows how frustrating it is when you try the latest techniques and none of them work to conquer your fear of driving. But you have to have faith that you will eventually find one that does work for you.

Visualization

Visualization is one of the best techniques there is when you need to overcome anxiety while driving. Visualization is a very powerful technique. It has been proven time and time again by world-class class athletes and other professionals who wish to improve their performance.

Visualization trains your mind to expect a positive outcome. It can also train mind and body as to how you want them to behave under certain conditions.

To implement visualization, you should practice it at least a few minutes twice a day. All you need to do is visualize having complete confidence driving under situations that normally would cause you anxiety like driving over a bridge.

Now you just have to repeat this script in your mind repeatedly and make it as vivid as possible. Basically you are training your mind and body to be more confident and to not suffer from anxiety.

Things To Do While Driving

Other things that you can do to try to overcome your fear of driving is to come up with things to do in the car to distract you. This could be trying to direct your focus only on the car in front of you and avoid all other distractions.

You may also want to listen to some self help tapes instead of listening to the radio. Anything that engages your mind into learning can keep your mind from wondering to other thoughts can cause anxiety while driving.
