Social Anxiety Treatment

Social anxiety treatment is for those people who are scared and fearful of being in social situations. And even those situations where they anticipate having to deal or interact with people.

People a social anxiety will often develop severe fear merely at the thought of having to deal with someone in a social situation.  This could be meeting with a boss or other superior at work, fear of being called upon in class, or meeting strangers in any situation.

Varies by Individual

The social anxiety treatment that works best will vary from person to person depending on the root cause of the problem.

For some people it might be seeing a therapist,  taking prescription medications, or even in reading self-help books.

Therapist

Not everyone feels comfortable seeing or talking to a therapist. But for those people who are, it can be a great way to learn how to deal with their fear of social situations.

If you do choose to see a therapist make sure you ask what their specific experience is in dealing with this disorder. Try not to find a therapist that specializes in everything, because they will not be as good as someone who specializes.  Also, ask what type of training they have had, and degrees held.

Lifestyle Changes

One of the main things that you can do right now for social anxiety treatment is to cut back on caffeine if you do drink it.

Caffeine is a nervous system stimulant that can cause many people to be very anxious and can even induce panic attacks by itself in some individuals.

Individual sensitivity to caffeine varies from person to person. While others might be able to tolerate a large amount, some people need to avoid it entirely.

Smoking and Alcohol

Nicotine is another nervous system stimulant that should also be avoided if you suffer from social anxiety. Although many people say that having a cigarette helps them to calm down, the opposite is actually true.

Another common drug people turn to as a social anxiety treatment is alcohol. And while alcohol may calm your nerves in the short term, as a long-term treatment it is obviously not well advised.

Conclusion

If you have read my article on end panic attacks, then you know that one of my favorite choices is Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Or put in layman's term, educating yourself more about what social anxiety is. Learning everything you can about this condition, why it happens, and what types of people it affects is the best social anxiety treatment in my mind.

In my mind this is better than all other treatments, seeing therapists, taking medications, or even going to group support classes.
