Best Treatment For Panic Attacks

The best treatment for panic attacks varies from individual to individual.   This is because everyone is different, and everyone will seek their own personal resources to try and solve this problem.

However as a whole there are several best treatments for panic attacks.

Therapist

 Fact #3

1.7% of Adults in the U.S. suffer from panic disorder each year.

Often cognitive behavioral therapy is often used as a first-line approach. This is mainly an informational way where people understand what is happening to them and what a panic attack is.

Many people who have panic attacks think they are going crazy or might be experiencing a heart attack. By changing one's thinking you can have a more realistic view of what's going on with your body.

This way you also realize that you're not going to die, and your body is not going to suddenly fly out of control. Once people realize this, an important mind shift takes place, which is often times curative in itself.

Paper Bag Rebreathing

Some doctors believe that the best treatment for panic attacks is paper bag rebreathing.  This is to be used as a short term treatment for an acute panic attack. However many people disagree about whether or not this is effective.

Until you try it out for yourself you'll never know. Some people think it's hazardous to people's health and can actually make a panic attack worse.

If you are hyperventilating during a panic attack sometimes this can be an effective treatment. If you're not hyperventilating it will likely make your situation worse.

Self-help Books

As stated before more information usually helps reduce the incidence of panic attacks because of the important mindset change we discussed earlier.

There are dozens and dozens of books that can help you solve this problem without having to involve a therapist.

Three of the most popular ones are Panic Away, The Linden method, and the Driving Fear Program.

Medications

While medications such as  antidepressants (SSRIs, MAOIs, tricyclic antidepessants)  have been used a lot, there is little evidence of their effectiveness.

Part of the reason why there is little evidence is that there appears to be only a few large scale, controlled studies performed. So the jury is still out on many of these medications.

However many people can solve panic attacks without any medications at all. In fact one anti-anxiety drug, benzodiazepine has been concluded that it is not an effective long-term treatment according to the National Institute for Clinical Excellence.

Also the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry also concludes benzodiazepines should not be used as a first-line treatment option.

Despite all this negative focus, antidepressants are often chosen as the best treatment for panic attacks mistakenly.

Recommendation

Ultimately the best treatment for panic attacks can only decided upon by you. What helped me in the past is mainly self-help books.

My recommendation is to try and understand every aspect of a panic attack in minute detail.  This will lead to an incredible mindset change which allows you to approach your problem from a state of power, instead of a state of fear.
