Prevent Panic Attacks
The best way to prevent panic attacks is to find out what is
causing them in the first place. One of the best ways to do
this is to start keeping a daily journal or diary.
And in this journal, you can call it your panic attack
journal, start keeping track of when you have your panic
attacks. Note the time of the day, the location, and what was
going on around you.
By keeping this journal you can start to recognize patterns
and then therefore learn how to interrupt those patterns in
order to best present panic attacks in the future.
Pattern Interrupts
Most people are conditioned to behave a certain way under
certain situations. And for people who suffer from panic
attacks for a long time, it almost becomes a bit of a
habit.
When a certain trigger sets you off, you have a panic
attack. If you know what those triggers are, and what your
mental thoughts are, all you need to do is interrupt that
behavioral pattern and your anxiety should stop.
This is another good reason to keep this journal. Because if
you realize what your own personal triggers are, you can learn
how to avoid them or at least minimize them.
NLP Anchoring
Another great way to prevent panic attacks is to anchor new
feelings to situations that in the past would have caused you
to have an attack. (NLP stands for neuro-linguistic
programming)
For example if you tend to have panic attacks when you're
riding the bus, you need to recondition your mind so that
riding on the bus is pleasurable experience.
One way to anchor this into your mind is to sit in a chair
and visualize that you are riding the bus. Visualize that you
are riding it happy and carefree. You're safe and not
experiencing any stress at all.
Then when you are experiencing a peak positive emotion,
pinch some skin on your hand, snap your fingers, or do some
other small physical thing that will act as an anchor.
If you repeat this exercise enough, just the mere action of
pinching your skin will suddenly cause you to re-experience
these positive feelings automatically. This is basically what
NLP anchoring is. And you can use it to help prevent panic
attacks.
What to Do Now
If you haven't already started to keep a journal do so now.
Make sure to write in it daily about what is happening and what
your experiences are.
Remember the best way to prevent panic attacks is to
interrupt your mind's thoughts. You can either do this by
immediately leaving the situation, doing a pattern interrupt,
or by firing off an anchor.
